General
What is ThePlay?

ThePlay is an IPTV player application designed specifically for Samsung Smart TVs running the Tizen operating system. It lets you watch live TV channels from M3U playlists with features like EPG, catchup, themes, and remote management.

Which Samsung TVs are supported?

ThePlay runs on Samsung Smart TVs with Tizen 3.0 and later. This includes most Samsung Smart TVs from 2017 onwards. The app is optimized for 1080p and 4K displays.

Does ThePlay provide TV channels or content?

No. ThePlay is a player application only. You need to provide your own M3U playlist from your IPTV provider. ThePlay does not host, distribute, or provide any streaming content.

Is ThePlay free?

ThePlay is currently available for personal use. Check the documentation for the latest information on availability and licensing.

Playlists
What playlist formats are supported?

ThePlay supports M3U and M3U8 playlists compatible with the pvr.iptvsimple format. This includes all standard EXTINF tags like tvg-id, tvg-name, tvg-logo, group-title, and catchup-related tags.

How do I add a playlist?

There are three ways to add a playlist: (1) Enter the M3U URL directly on the TV, (2) Load an M3U file from a USB drive, or (3) Pair your TV with the web portal and manage playlists remotely from your phone or computer.

Can I use multiple playlists?

Yes. ThePlay supports multiple playlists with per-source auto-reload settings. You can enable or disable individual playlists in Settings. When using remote management, you can assign different playlists to different TVs.

Does it support custom headers (User-Agent, Referrer)?

Yes. ThePlay supports the pipe syntax for per-channel headers: url|user-agent=X&referer=Y. Headers are automatically applied to each stream.

EPG / Programme Guide
How does EPG work?

ThePlay loads programme data from XMLTV sources. If your playlist includes an EPG URL (via url-tvg or x-tvg-url header), it's detected automatically. You can also add EPG sources manually in Settings.

Can I use multiple EPG sources?

Yes. You can add multiple XMLTV sources with individual timezone offset settings. ThePlay merges data from all sources and matches channels by tvg-id, tvg-name, or display name.

Is EPG data cached?

Yes. EPG data is cached locally with configurable retention (1–10 days). The cache uses a compact format that saves approximately 80% storage space. On app start, cached data is loaded instantly before fetching fresh data.

Remote Management
How does remote pairing work?

During setup, select “Remote” as your playlist source. The TV displays a 6-character pairing code. Log in to the web portal, click “Pair Device”, and enter the code. Once paired, any playlists you assign to that device will automatically sync to the TV.

Can I manage multiple TVs?

Yes. Each TV gets its own pairing code and device token. You can pair multiple TVs to your account and assign different playlists to each device from the web portal dashboard.

Is the pairing secure?

Yes. Pairing codes expire after 10 minutes and can only be used once. After pairing, the TV receives a cryptographically secure 256-bit device token. Communication uses HTTPS. MAC addresses are stored for display purposes only and are never used for authentication.

Catchup / Archive
Does ThePlay support catchup/archive?

Yes. ThePlay supports multiple catchup modes: default, append, shift, flussonic/fs, Xtream Codes (xc), and VOD. It reads catchup settings from the M3U playlist tags (catchup, catchup-source, catchup-days).

How do I play a past programme?

Open the EPG guide, navigate to a past programme, and press Enter. If the channel supports catchup, ThePlay will build the archive URL and start playback with a timeline scrubbar for seeking.

Troubleshooting
Channels are not loading

Check that your playlist URL is accessible and returns a valid M3U file. Ensure your TV has a stable internet connection. If using a provider that requires MAC authentication, verify the correct MAC address in Settings > System.

Stream plays audio but no video (or vice versa)

Try switching to a different audio track. Some streams have specific codec requirements. Check Settings > Player for buffer mode and max resolution options. Restarting the TV can also resolve AVPlay engine issues.

EPG is not showing for some channels

EPG matching depends on tvg-id in your playlist matching channel id in the XMLTV file. If they don't match, try setting tvg-name to the exact display name used in the EPG source. You can also check timezone offset settings for your EPG source.
